Why Do I Feel More Anxious as the Seasons Change?

Have you noticed that you feel more anxious when fall arrives—even when nothing specific seems to be wrong?
You’re not imagining it.
As the seasons change, shorter days, less daylight, shifting routines, and the pressure to get “back on track” can all affect how you feel. For some people, fall brings a noticeable increase in anxiety, restlessness, overwhelm, or difficulty settling down.
That doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong with you. Sometimes, your mind and nervous system are simply responding to change.
Why Does Anxiety Increase in the Fall?
1. There’s Less Daylight
As fall progresses, the days become shorter and we have less exposure to natural light. Changes in daylight can affect sleep-wake patterns, energy levels, and mood.
If you already tend toward anxiety or emotional overwhelm, these shifts can sometimes make it harder to feel grounded.
You may notice that you feel more tired, have less energy, or find yourself feeling unsettled without an obvious reason.
2. Your Routine Changes
Summer often has a different rhythm—later evenings, more flexibility, vacations, travel, or a slower schedule.
Then fall arrives and suddenly there are earlier mornings, fuller calendars, work or school routines, appointments, activities, and more responsibilities.
Even positive changes can create stress.
Your nervous system doesn’t necessarily distinguish between “good change” and “bad change.” A major shift in routine still requires adjustment.
3. Fall Can Bring a Lot of “Shoulds”
There can be an unspoken expectation that fall is the time to get organized, become productive, establish new routines, and start accomplishing everything you may have put off during the summer.
Maybe you’re thinking:
I should have a better routine by now.
I need to get back on track.
Everyone else seems to have it together.
I’m already behind.
For someone who struggles with anxiety, perfectionism, ADHD, or people-pleasing, these expectations can quickly turn a seasonal transition into a source of pressure.
What Can You Do When Fall Anxiety Shows Up?
You don’t have to completely overhaul your life to feel more grounded.
Let Your Routine Adjust Gradually
Instead of expecting yourself to immediately become highly productive, give yourself time to transition.
Choose one or two routines that help you feel steady—such as a consistent bedtime, a morning walk, or eating regular meals—and build from there.
Get Outside During the Day
When possible, spend some time outside during daylight hours. Even a short walk or sitting outside with your coffee can provide a meaningful pause in your day.
Think of this as connection with your environment rather than another task you need to accomplish.
Notice the Pressure You're Putting on Yourself
When you notice thoughts about being behind or needing to “get it together,” pause and ask:
“Do I actually need to do this right now, or am I responding to the feeling that I should?”
Sometimes reducing anxiety begins with reducing the pressure we place on ourselves.
When Is Seasonal Anxiety Worth Talking About?
Some adjustment during a seasonal transition is completely normal. But if your anxiety lasts for several weeks, continues to intensify, or begins interfering with sleep, relationships, work, school, or everyday life, it may be worth talking with a therapist.
You don't have to wait until things feel overwhelming to reach out.
